Bone biopsy and bone marrow access is performed with basic manual “Jamshidi-like” needles or electromechanical battery-operated drills. Manual needles are inexpensive and provide feel for access, but are slow, imprecise, time consuming, and associated with patient pain.
Battery-operated drills are fast, but are expensive and reduce feel for accessing the biopsy location or marrow. The PILOT combines the benefits of manual needles and electric drills with a cost-effective technology that allows clinicians to feel access. The platform has been licensed in different non-competing forms to three different companies.
